What is Black Forest Known For?

Black Forest is a small unincorporated town with a large history behind it. The town is a part of what is known as the “Pineries,” which encompasses a 1,000 square mile area. Black Forest itself is in the portion of the “Pineries” that is north of Colorado Springs. It is unclear as to where the actual name came from, but the town is well-known by that name so it has remained throughout the years. 

The “Pineries” themselves were originally occupied by several different Native American tribes who pushed one another out throughout the years. These include the Ute, Comanche, Kiowa, Arapahoe, and Cheyenne. Eventually, the American pioneers came and settled in the 1850s. Black Forest and the rest of the “Pineries” was first settled and used for its timber. By the 1950s, agriculture had taken over and Black Forest was most renowned for its potato crop.
